Founded by Swedish artist Lars Vilks in 1996 as an alternative area or nation, Ladonia occupies 1 km-squared of the Kullaberg Nature Reserve in Skane. Artworks were created here by Vilks since 1980, however since no permission was sought for the creation of  the works a battle commenced between the authorities, who wanted to remove them, and Vilks who was backed by several other renowned artists and cultural colleagues who supported the right to create these works.

Today there are a number of permanent pieces to view, in addition to a temporary sculpture biennial.

Ladonia is open to the public, free of charge.
