Academic mentoring at Birkbeck

Birkbeck was awarded the Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award in 2012, and one of the College’s key commitments was to investigate the effectiveness of existing mentoring arrangements within the STEMM (science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics) departments and develop mentoring opportunities as part of the Bronze Institutional Award action plan.

The TRIGGER-Athena SWAN mentoring programme

A pilot mentoring programme for academic and research staff was developed and run in 2013/14.  Initially focussed on STEM subject areas, the programme was broadened to include all academic and research staff within the College.  This reflects the changes that have taken place in the College’s gender equality work and the revised Athena SWAN Charter.

Birkbeck HR Department and TRIGGER work together to run the mentoring programme.

The Programme brings together experienced colleagues who are able to share their insights on navigating careers. Each mentee is coupled with a more experienced mentor, and both mentees and mentors are trained to support them in developing the mentoring relationship.

Participants on previous programmes have positively evaluated the programme as a useful aid to career development and progression.
