Development Programme

Development Centres are a structured programme of six one-day workshops, spreading over two years (2014-2016), and focused on fostering scientific careers. They are targeted at both women and men academics and early career researchers from STEM disciplines (this mainly involves Birkbeck’s School of Science and School of Business, Economics and Informatics). They are designed and conducted by Andrew Atter, entrepreneur, mentor and executive coach, with the support of Karen Hands, trainer and business coach.

The Science Development Programme is designed to:

  • Develop the leadership skills academics need to enhance their career;
  • Build awareness of what it means to be a scientific leader of the future, and experiment with a range of leadership styles;
  • Learn to work in gender-balanced and diverse teams.

The focus in the 2014-15 phase is on enabling participants to increase their ability to secure a senior role; in the second phase, 2015-16, the focus shifts to pitching for research funds.
