The following documents are a note regarding the psychiatric appraisal of men and women released from concentration camps, presumably written by David Levy, in which emotional states ranging from severe depression and 'retarded' functioning, mania and elation, to states of aggression and severe paranoia are discussed. Role of Dicks is raised; the work of Lt Col [Tom] Maine, Major Bion and the Northfield Experiments are also cited here.

Report on the establishment of the ICD screening centre, which ran from Oct. 1945 to August 1946: it offered a unique opportunity for the 'psychiatric examination of Germans.' It describes the particular role of Dr Schaffner, as the main psychiatrist working at the centre and his forthcoming book. Psychiatric studies were made in liaison with a political analyst and a psychologist. The Centre also gathered 'field work' embodied in numerous other reports.

US intelligence commentary by Major Schaffner (17 May 1946) on report about presented state of German culture. Schaffner is surprised that this particular report (unlike all others) questions the idea that the father is the symbol of authority in the German family.

Correspondence re ICD screening centre, including letter from Hans Speier (10 January 1946) to Levy, objecting to the invasive nature of the psychiatric testing and interrogation. Speier suggests that the military authorities have no right to inquire into the sex life, childhood, relationship to parents, etc, as these are the private concern of the person. He objects to the coercion (the psychiatrist is there for the invading power) that obliges the subjects to respond to such questioning. Levy's letter to General McClure (dated 23 January 1946) seeks to deal with Speier's objections and protests that were Speier to be successful in his challenge, it would destroy the work of the centre which is based upon the idea that a man's personality is highly relevant to his politics. Moreover he points out that if such techniques are seen as 'intimidation' then it must be recognized that the same approach is used in the internal screening proceedings of the OSS and army. It is said that the British authorities are using still more testing inquiries in their screening operations for key personnel in Germany. Also included here, letter from Richard Brickner to Levy (10 December 1945).
