New Virtual Special Issue: Innovation Intermediaries and Emerging Digital Technologies

Digital technologies have ushered in significant changes in the landscape of innovation intermediation. From Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain, these technologies have not only reshaped business models but have also given rise to non-human intermediaries such as crowdsourcing platforms. However, there remains a gap in understanding how intermediaries and intermediation are evolving under the influence of digital technologies.

The new Virtual Special Issue in Technovation, focusing on “Innovation Intermediaries and Emerging Digital Technologies”, delves into the transformative impact of digital technologies on innovation intermediaries and how these intermediaries facilitate the adoption of digital innovations. The special issue is guest edited by our CIMR Deputy Director Federica Rossi, alongside Ana Colovic, Annalisa Caloffi, Dr. Stefania Paladini, and Mehdi Bagherzadeh.

Overview of the Special Issue

The papers included in this special issue explore various facets of innovation intermediaries in the context of emerging digital technologies. They offer insights into how intermediaries contribute to digital technology adoption, how they adapt to technological change, and how they facilitate innovation through intermediation.

Key Contributions

The ten papers featured in this special issue offer diverse perspectives on innovation intermediaries and digital technologies. They are categorized into three sets based on the broad research questions they address:

1. Digital Disruption: These papers examine the disruptive changes brought about by digital technologies, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that may struggle to leverage these opportunities.

2. Intermediaries in Action: This set of papers delves into the role of intermediaries in facilitating the adoption and integration of digital technologies within organizations, shedding light on their strategies and mechanisms.

3. Future Directions: Lastly, these papers outline avenues for future research, highlighting areas that require further exploration to enhance our understanding of innovation intermediaries and their interaction with digital technologies.
