Many new buildings today don’t look so new at all, with their scuffed surfaces and carefully retained fragments of older structures. These tendencies respond to increasingly pressing demands for sustainability, but are they anything more than superficial formal strategies?
ASSC member Tom Wilkinson is currently History Editor at The Architectural Review, where he has worked since 2012, and a Lecturer in History of Architecture at Birkbeck, UoL. He has previously been a lecturer at the Courtauld Institute and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the Warburg Institute. He has a PhD in the history of art from UCL, London. Tom is co-founder and co-director of New Architecture Writers, a programme for young people of colour. He has written for the Guardian, Domus, Tribune, Apollo, and the Architect’s Journal, among others. His first book was published in 2014, titled Bricks and Mortals: Ten Great Buildings and the People They Made, and his forthcoming book on the visual culture of the German hyperinflation is due 2023.
