In 2021, the Ljubljana opus of the idiosyncratic Slovene architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) was listed on the Unesco World Heritage List. But not quite all of them: Plečnik’s Stadium, completed in 1935, was excluded because of a threat of destruction through a radical public-private »redevelopment« supported by the Municipality of Ljubljana. Seen alternatively as a heritage-saving renovation by its stakeholders and heritage obliteration by the professional community, the Stadium still remains the unresolved battleground where commodification of Plečnik’s heritage, real-estate speculation and community action meet. 

Miloš Kosec is an architect, editor and publicist living and working in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Ljubljana University with the Master’s thesis Ruin as an Architectural Object, published as a book in 2013. Miloš completed his PhD in 2019 at Birkbeck College, University of London, with a thesis Passivism: Activism and Passivity in Contemporary Architecture. He is employed as a curator in the Museum for Architecture and Design in Ljubljana and is an Associate Research Fellow at School of Arts, Birkbeck.
