Victorian virtues

Introduction

The Scout Movement is a worldwide youth movement founded in England in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell. The avowed aim of the movement was to support the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people, and thus enable them to play constructive roles in society. Scouting emphasises “learning by doing”, which provides experience and hands-on orientation as a practical method of learning and building self-confidence. Small groups encourage a feeling of camaraderie, unity and fraternity. These experiences, coupled with stress upon personal honour and trustworthiness, were intended to help to develop character, self-reliance, responsibility, and self-confidence.
