Introduction

The British philosopher, MP, political theorist and economist John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), was one of the most influential classical liberal thinkers of the 19th century. Published posthumously, his Autobiography contains an honest and heart-felt account of his life and education. It also describes the conflict between Mill’s intellect and soul that would result in periods of both psychic breakdown and ground-breaking philosophy.
