Introduction

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-born novelist regarded by many critics to be one of the greatest novelists in the English language. His great symbolic novella The Heart of Darkness was published in 1899. Set in the Belgian Congo, in a time of oppressive colonisation when much of Africa was viewed by Europeans as a ‘dark continent’, unknown and barbarous, the story stages a journey beyond the limits of civilization, in geographical and moral terms. It draws upon Conrad’s own experiences on a journey into the Congo Free State in 1890.
