Introduction

In a similar fashion to the extract from Carpenter, the eminent psychiatrist Henry Maudsley examines mental functions in relation to the threshold of consciousness: ‘When an idea disappears from consciousness, it does not necessarily disappear entirely, it may remain in latent action below the horizon of consciosness…’ Thoughts, as later with Freud, are described in materialist terms as intensities of energy and ideational currents, while the associations of ideas are compared with muscular reflexes.
