‘The New Hedonism’ appeared in Fortnightly Review in March 1894 and shows the elegant symbiosis in Allen’s thinking, between aesthetics and evolutionary theory. Both of these in turn are combined with his defence of personal liberty in affairs of the heart, his opposition to the rigid codifications of marriage, and his support of the ‘new woman’ that starts to emerge as a cultural possibility at the turn of the century.
