Introduction

Born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1840, Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing was an Austro-German psychiatrist and sexologist. His most famous and enduring work was Psychopathia Sexualis (1886), a series of cases studies of sexual perversity. The study encompassed a wide range of topics, including female sexual pleasure, homosexuality, sadism, masochism and the mental states of sexual offenders. It was to remain an authority on sexual aberrance for decades and was arguably one of the most influential pre-Freud books on human sexuality.
