Introduction

George Gissing, born in Wakefield in 1857, was a prolific English novelist, one of the most accomplished realist authors of the late-Victorian age. Together with New Grub Street (1891), Born In Exile (1892) and The Odd Women (1893), In The Year of Jubilee (1894) is one of his most highly regarded novels. As a body of work they variously deal with the situation of emancipated women in a male-dominated society, religious charlatanism, the poverty of the working classes and marriage in a decadent world. Gissing died in 1903.
