Corkscrew moves on…

We marked ten years of Corkscrew at Birkbeck with a celebratory event at the ICA on 28 June, 2023. We held a Lois Weaver inspired Long Table discussion where anyone could join and share their experiences of practice as research and research as practice. Along the table was a timeline of Corkscrew events we’ve done between 2013-2023. We were very happy Carol Watts, who co-founded of Corkscrew in 2013, could join us. Birkbeck staff, students and Corkscrew members from further afield also joined us at the table. Delicious vegan food was provided by Lovage Project.

This followed a ‘show and tell’ workshop the same afternoon with current PhD students (Sopolnawitch Ponglamjiak from Goldsmiths, Alex Parry from Coventry and Helena Wee, Selina Robertson, Ruth Schryber, Henry Mulhall, Simon King, and Heather Goodman from Birkbeck). We focused the how, what, where and why of analysis in their practice-research.

Sophie has now left Birkbeck and is hoping to continue aspects of Corkscrew as an independent researcher. The Loosen Up! Podcasts will be coming soon – do sign up to the new mailing list to receive info about these and future events:

Sophie would like to thank everyone who has supported Corkscrew over the years, in particular: Janet McCabe, Carol Watts, Louise Owen, Ayca Onkal, Lina Dzuverovic, Jo Coleman, Luciana Martins, Catherine Grant, Anthony Shepherd and also the Birkbeck Graduate Research School and CHASE for occasional, well-needed funding.
