- Workshop on the REF and practice-based research with Prof Anne Boddington: Anne was the deputy chair of sub-panel 34 (Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory) for REF 2014, and came to share her experience and help us work through some concerns and questions we have about practice-based research. Specifically, she presented on:
– Ideas she has on the ingredients of a good portfolio.
– How universities can best support practice-based researchers (staff and students).
– How we might connect research – impact – teaching in practice. (27.9.17) - Supervisors workshop: Dr Becky Shaw, Reader in Fine Art and Postgraduate Research Tutor for the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University facilitated a workshop for supervisors of practice-based research students at Birkbeck. We explored our experiences and understandings of practice-based research; the particular challenges our students are facing and examples of the upgrade process and preparing for examination. - Doctoral Masterclass with Associate Professor Mia Lindgren from Monash University, Australia. This Masterclass focused on practice-based research methods in journalism, primarily in radio and audio forms, but with relevance to other fields and formats through exploration of the relationship between the creative project and the exegesis. (15.1.18)
- Awkward Encounters: Consent in Practice-Research: A peer-to-peer workshop for exchanging tactics, methods and concerns about negotiating consent in practice-research. Facilitated by Sarah Jury and Hamish MacPherson. (21.6.17).
- Show and tell workshop. 2 current PhD students present their practice-research: Jo Coleman: “Please identify yourself for the tape.”: Demystifying the interview process and Caroline Molloy: Re-imagined communities: understanding the visual habitus of transcultural photographs. (29.11.17).
- Staff Exchange: Dr Sophie Hope (Birkbeck) and Dr Anthony Schrag (Queen Margaret University) discussed their research as socially engaged practice embedded in the context of working environments and the challenges this brings.(29.11.17).
- Staff Exchange: Dr Julia Bell (Birkbeck) and Dr Honor Gavin (University of Manchester) discussed their creative writing as research. (16.5.18).
- Show and tell workshop. 2 current PhD students present their practice-research: Golnoosh Nourp: Representations of Iranian female sexuality in Iranian contemporary literature and Selina Robertson: A curatorial investigation into the hidden histories and cultural memory of 1980s London’s lesbian feminist and queer film curatorial practices.
