Sector 10-C
Chandigarh, India 160011

Dedicated to Padmashri Dhanraj Bhagat, sculptor and Government College of Art alum, Dhanraj Bhagat Sculpture Park officially opened 15 October, 2010.

Padmashri Dhanraj Bhagat is considered to have been inspirational to younger generations, encouraging creativity through his inner logic that transcends physical hardship of the material and the manipulating resources. Following the sculptor’s mantra, “creativity leads us from mundane to divine”, the sculpture park was inaugurated with the exhibition “Life & Earth”, created by students of the college’s Master of Fine Art program.

Acting as an open-space workshop for the students of Government College of Art and an exhibition space for finished work, the aim of Dhanraj Bhagat Sculpture Park is to find oneness with nature.

Chandigarth was the modernist city planned by Le Corbusier in 1958. Nek Chand moved to northern India to work as a road inspector for this government project. He started planning and building an outdoor environment, in secret, in 1965 on several acres of government land. Ten years later the authorities discovered his magical project, a complex that by then had over two hundred pottery covered concrete statues of men. Public pressure on the government was successful in preventing the demolition of The Rock Garden, and Chand was given a salary and a crew of workmen to help finish his project. It now covers over 40 acres and was opened to the public in 1976.

The Rock Garden is open daily from 9am till 6pm during winter, till 7pm in the summer. Admission is charged.
