MCE team members co-organised and participated in a recent event at Caltech: ‘Coping with Scarcity: Energy Shortages, Food Crises, Drought, and Critical Materials in the Modern World (c. 1800 to the present)’, a conference hosted by the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Resnick Sustainability Institute at Caltech, Pasadena, CA, USA, 14-15 November 2014.

Heather Chappells contributed a paper on ‘Everyday Encounters with Scarcity: What Do Disruptions Reveal about the Meaning and Dynamics of Consumer Practice?’.

Hiroki Shin and Frank Trentmann presented a paper on ‘Energy Shortages and the Reproduction of Social Life: Resilience, Redistribution, and ‘Normality’ in the Twentieth Century’.
