Join us on Friday June 24 at 7pm in the Birkeck Cinema to celebrate the launch of our new MA World Cinema.

This MA will introduce students to the cinematic traditions of different regions and continents and help explore them through our expertise in key technological, cultural and political developments. It promotes a critical approach to the concept of World Cinema and mobilises topics ranging from national/regional cinema to migration, diaspora, post-colonialism and globalisation.

In addition to Birkbeck’s library and the University of London library students will have access to the British Film Institute library, located close nearby. The purpose-built Birkbeck Cinema houses regular
screenings and lectures.

The launch of the programme will be marked by a screening of: The First Movie (dir Mark Cousins, 2009): “Filmed on crystalline sharp HD, The First Movie uses the camera to effect an act of willed regression. With camerawork that tends to focus in on details from a fixed point – an attitude of restrained curiosity, intimate yet unobstrusive – Cousins nudges us to see or imagine beyond what is merely described on screen.” (Edward Lawrenson, Sight and Sound)
