I joined the Developmental Neurocognition Lab in January of 2011 to work in the WORD project with Michael Thomas. The aim of the project is to better understand word retrieval problems (or word finding difficulties) in children. As a part of the project, I will build an artificial neural network that models vocabulary development and its problems.

We all have the tip-of-the tongue experience sometimes, when we know that we know the word, we just can t bring it out from the back of our minds. In some children this problem is so serious that it can influence their relationships, self-esteem and education. Researchers in the WORD project will try to better understand this problem, by collecting data from children with typically developing language and others with word-finding difficulties. These data will be used to validate connectionist models for vocabulary development in the two groups. The model will be used to predict the optimal intervention strategy for children with different profiles for word-finding difficulties and finally, experimentally controlled intervention will test these strategies.

Publications

István Zachar, Anna Fedor, Eörs Szathmáry (submitted).
