The Museum began acquiring photographs in 1852 and its collection is now one of the largest and most important in the world. It holds over 500,000 images, by both classic and contemporary photographers, and illustrates a wide range of processes, techniques and subject matter.

Holdings

The Victoria and Albert photography collection comprises a number of albums and loose images on Latin America and the Caribbean. It includes archaeological and anthropological albums, landscapes, cityscapes and studies in architecture, rare stereoscope images of Copan in Honduras, and some portraits. Most importantly, the collection features images by renowned photographers such as Edward Weston, Curtis Moffat and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Consultation

Please note that not all the V&A photography collections are available on the online catalogue. In addition, the full database is currently only searchable by V&A staff.

A small number of photographs on Latin America and the Caribbean are included in the V&A’s Access to Images service.

The V&A collections of photographs can be consulted in The Prints & Drawings Study Room
