Mental Health Awareness Week is commencing on the 13th of May and this year’s theme is: “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”

The Wellbeing Service together with the Student Union have created a great programme for you to get involved during the week the activities are listed below and we will have a “Mental Health Hub” from Monday 13th – Friday 17th on Birkbeck Central G07 3-5pm. Additionally we will have a great number of activities for you to join us

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION - Sponsored by the YMCA Club a Fitness and Wellbeing Community 

Unleash your creativity and spread awareness with our Movement and Mental Health Photo Competition!

In a world where every step forward is a victory for the mind and body, we're calling you to capture the essence of movement and its profound impact on mental well-being. Whether it's a moment of serenity in nature, the energy of a bustling citylife, or the determination in the eyes of an athlete, show us how movement fuels your mental health journey.

Here's how to participate:

  1. Follow our Instagram page @birkbeck_ stuadvice
  2. Post your original photo showcasing movement and its connection to mental health.
  3. Tag us @birkbeck_stuadvice and use the hashtag #MoveWithMentalHealth in your caption.
  4. Don't forget to share a brief story behind your photo, highlighting the significance of movement in your mental wellness journey.

FREE YOGA SESSION 

Wednesday 22nd May 3.30-4.30 – bring comfortable clothing and a Yoga mat or towel!

Location: BCB 307

Join Birkbeck's Anne-Marie Taylor for a chance to catch your breath, move your body and drop into deep rest. This session will combine gentle yoga poses with breathing exercises and restorative postures to stretch and soften into your body, reduce stress and calm the mind. You don't need to be flexible or have any experience of yoga. Wear something comfy to move in, and please bring a yoga or Pilates mat if you have one.

Anne-Marie is a qualified yoga teacher (Yoga London 200 hour certificate, 2020). She has worked at Birkbeck since 2002 in a variety of roles and currently works in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK ACTIVITIES SCHEDULE 

MONDAY 13TH

  • 12-12.20pm: GUIDED BODY SCAN MEDITATION

20 min guided body scan meditation  ‘this an opportunity for you to ground, slow down, get out of the mind and re-connect to your body’. In room BCB 307 book your place here

  •  2-2.20pm: THE GUIDED MINDFUL BREATHING EXERCISE

20 min guided mindful breathing exercise ‘this is an opportunity to become aware of the rhythm of your breath, noticing and observing your breathing patterns, and learn new skills to breathe better and more deeply.’ In room BCB 307 book your place here

  •  3-5pm: MENTAL HEALTH HUB

TUESDAY 14TH

  • 2-3.30pm MANAGING STRESS AND BUILDING RESILIENCE

Online workshop on  aims to explore stress and its effects on us so we can better understand how to manage it more effectively. We will look at and share between us, the coping strategies needed to adapt to challenges and grow our resilience. Book your ticket for the Managing Stress and Building Resilience workshop.

  •  3-5pm: CLUED UP

Student Union Support (SUS) will like to invite you to Clued up Session. “Clued Up” interactive sessions, give advice on a range of academic issues. We have two special guest MAL by Main Reception

  • Photography Competition Results – look out for the student bulletin

THURSDAY 16TH

  • 11am -12.30pm COFFEE MORNING

Want a free tea and coffee? want to meet someone new? then come along to our coffee morning.  This time we are raising awareness for mental health and want you to come along. It’s a chance to relax, study, meet someone new and have a lovely people and get a free hot drink!

First floor of the Library

  •  3-7pm: FOOD PANTRY

Food pantry is a FREE service we offer to our students, it’s there for anyone who might be in need at the moment, it provides a-lot of the basics essential, both food and hygiene. BCB G07

  • 10am-3pm WALK AROUND LONDON – 6 HOURS

Free trip! take your Oyster Card and come on a Journey with Birkbeck Union Student Union Support to explore unique places around London from Central to East, to  West London. Explore street art, food and let share the day together.
