Call for papers – Special Issue on “University-Industry Collaborations for Inclusive Innovation and Sustainable Development”, Journal of Intellectual Property Management

Guest Editors:
Dr. Jasmina Berbegal-Mirabent, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Spain; Dr. Federica Rossi, Birkbeck, University of London, UK; Dr. Ugo Rizzo, University of Ferrara, Italy

As innovation and knowledge are increasingly driving economic development (Erdil et al., 2018), universities are expected not only to provide crucial knowledge inputs for business innovation processes, but also to lead resource mobilisation and entrepreneurial experimentation (Fayolle & Redford, 2014) to aid inclusive innovation and sustainable development (Arocena et al., 2017; Brudenius et al., 2016).

While university-industry collaborations (UICs) have been extensively studied in relation to their contribution to business innovation (Mascarenhas et al., 2018; Perkmann et al., 2013), there is limited evidence on how they can contribute to achieving sustainable development goals (Orecchini et al., 2012). This special issue seeks to fill this gap in research and advance scholarly understanding on how universities and businesses can cooperate for the benefit of the broader society.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Opportunities for the engagement of universities and businesses in social entrepreneurship and innovation; collaboration with local agents
  • University-industry initiatives (based on bottom-up, open innovation, co-creation approaches) aimed at addressing sustainable goals
  • Critical issues around the disclosure and commercialisation of the outcomes resulting from university- industry inclusive innovation activities
  • Critical issues around the organisation and management of UICs for the achievement of sustainable development objectives: roles of absorptive capacity, trust, commitment, communication, institutional framework, etc.
  • Design and implementation of instruments (policies, norms, incentives) to encourage academics/businesses to engage in inclusive innovation and sustainable development activities In methodological terms, we encourage case-based, conceptual and empirically-based submissions. Strong emphasis should be placed to the managerial and policy implications. Literature reviews are also welcome.
