Dr Jasmina Berbegal Mirabent, Associate Professor at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Spain conducted an excellent workshop on Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) on April 29th at Birkbeck, University of London. It was well attended by both staff and PhD students from different universities.
During this workshop Jasmina introduced participants to the technical and empirical underpinnings of QCA. She convincingly combined theoretical explanations with practical exercises to provide a comprehensive understanding.
Topics covered include:
- What is QCA? Epistemological assumptions and terminology
- Relevance of QCA in the academic literature
- Calibration
- Model fit: Coverage and consistency
- Analysis of necessity and sufficiency
- Truth table and minimisation
- Evaluation and interpretation of the results
- XY plots
- Robustness checks
Many thanks Jasmina, for teaching us this innovative approach which is especially useful in situations with multilevel explanations and influences. As management fields are causally complex, we could now use QCA effectively to deal with this complexity and study cases as configurations of causes and conditions rather than treating each independent variable.
