The Event
Facilitated by Dr Rachel Smart (doctoral alumni of Birkbeck!), and Tim Staniland, two of London’s most popular start up mentors.
This event boils down to real advice of the nitty gritty variety:
- How do you organise your time?
- How to present yourself?
- How to communicate?
They will give feedback on how we assess the viability of businesses at very early stages and how to present yourself to people that might be able to help you; as well as how approach work/funding/applications/etc.
Between them, Rachel and Tim have seen 1000s of tiny businesses at early stages and are used to making assessments of the person and the proposition.
The Speakers
Dr. Rachel Smart is one of the capital’s leading consultants to entrepreneurs in the creative sector. She trained as a designer herself at Loughborough College of Art and Middlesex University before becoming practice manager at an architectural practice where she was soon promoted to director. Rachel knows all about the challenges of working, studying and running a business at the same time. She completed her MBA at Durham University Business School while working and left her job to open her own management consultancy. She later returned to study, earning her PhD from Birkbeck School of Management while running her business. Dr. Smart is uniquely well placed to advise Birkbeck students on running a business.
Tim Staniland is a senior consultant at business improvement company Angle Advance. Tim has supported a business to sell one patent to a biotech company for development into a drug delivery system and is in the process of licensing another patent relating to personal care products to the owner of a large global personal care brand. This experience gives Tim first hand knowledge of the processes of creating value from IP and the experience necessary to develop complex financial models undertake significant contractual negotiations with large corporations.
