Dispatches from the Air

Sound walk and Radio Talk

NOTE: This event has been post-poned until 9th September

The Bloomsbury Dispatches from the Air Series Launch.

Monday 9 September, 18:00

Location: TBA

Not able to travel to Watchet for our launch? Join us in Bloomsbury instead on Monday 9th September (6pm) where we will be running the Bloomsbury launch of Dispatches from the Air: a summer-long,  sound exchange project between London and Watchet, West Somerset. The project creates a space where members of the public can record and submit sounds from their surroundings via this form. These recordings will then be re-mixed at a workshop held in Birkbeck’s computer labs, to create cross-country soundscapes. Keep an eye out for our online launch in the autumn.

The project was inspired by a collection of WWII-era recording equipment housed at The Radio Museum in Watchet, Somerset and the BBC ‘Midget’ recorders that were used to send despatches from the front line. We are delighted that Neil Wilson, curator of the museum, will be joining sound researcher and doctoral candidate, Emily Best for a talk on sound recording, listening and the collapsing of distance via the medium of sound.

The talk will be followed by a guided walk towards Marconi House (the place of the first BBC broadcast), inviting you to listen to and record your audio surroundings.

This is a Free event open to all, however, please book a free ticket in advance (link coming soon) as there are limited places available.
